| Do you think MP3 players and wireless devices are just portable storage in disguise? |

Here are a couple of responses I received via email from your peers......
"In my opinion if we don't regard them as portable storage devices we may find that users will treat them as such and we may find corporate information being stored on them with out regard to normal corporate policies for securing the data."

"Yes - at least I use my PDA as an archive I bring with me. Mainly documentation - but sometimes even I hold patches and installations there. I know some people who bought iPod - but they are using more as convenient external 1394 hard disk then they use it to listen music."

Here's another response I received from a fellow member...
"Yes, I think portable devices are either storage in disguise or I/O portals for central storage" |

|

It's unstoppable that the ubiquitos of iPod kind of portable storage bank will lead a trend like the PCs in 1980's. Sooner or later, the mainstream IT infrastructure will need to cope or better deploy this media because it is so pervasive and cost effective.
On the other end of the spectrum, main stream IT storage tiers devices will take a on demand type of architecture and include real memory storage as the 1st tier of the storage pool, knocking high performance discs to 2nd tier, low cost RAID disc to 3rd and sending tape/optical ROM devices to a graveyard tier or simply obsolete. |

Hi Benedict,
You raise some interesting points about the future of storage. I completely agree with you that IT infrastructures will need to support and incorporate these types of devices. They are everywhere and new devices appear to be born everyday.
Security, compliance, governance, management, protection and even things like versioning become much larger issues when all of your data is so dispersed. It's hard enough to manage your data and files on a single device never mind when they span devices, systems and infrastructure.... Do you think CAS systems will help with this?
I'm intrigued by your comment about tape and optical becoming obsolete - there is a report on the site that talks about this ("Tape Replacement Realities" http://www.cascommunity.org/portal/read.php?ca=119a3eac1eba4731802c2d9165553487) - How do you think people will meet their requirements for off-site vaulting? Or do you think that goes away too?
Benedict, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this and hope others will join in as well - I look forward to a great discussion!
Regards,
Tanya |

Here's an interesting job I found in this field. Looks like some companies are starting to plan for this within their IT infrastructures..... Do you think all companies should begin planning?
The successful candidate will serve as the department's lead consultant in wireless security, PDA security and remote computing platform security.

I just read this article on MSNBC - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9371598/
Remote controls for your life - Cell phones let you retrieve files, avoid traffic, even program TiVo
What do you think?
Is the Jetson's lifestyle closer than we think?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts...

Here's a new article on PDAs. I think a lot of you will be able to relate...
http://www.theage.com.au/news/technology/rage-against-the-machines/2006/02/08/1139074278718.html
Although PDAs have now become valuable tools for the working world, I think this article really exposes the downside.... Are you "always on"? "Too connected"? Does this sound familiar? Do you agree that we all need to drop out now and then?
I think we do - they can quickly take over your lives if you let them. I'm looking forward to your take on this.
Enjoy
