Well, I'm sure you've all heard some buzz around the amendments to the Federal Rules for Civil Procedures (FRCP). It's hard to understand all the changes and what it means to your businesses, so I thought we should start a discussion. This way we can learn from each other and share what we know.

Here are a few articles, I've found on the topic:

http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid5_gci1241499,00.html?bucket=NEWS&topic=298759
http://www.itbcomputing.com/pr/12581
http://technology.findlaw.com/articles/00006/010189.html

And the text of the FRCP Amendments: http://www.uscourts.gov/rules/EDiscovery_w_Notes.pdf

Can any of you shed some light on these new rules? I heard they went into effect on December 31, 2006.....

Thanks,
Tanya

While speaking with our legal department, I heard this snippet: our company is nationwide, but our legal department has designed their infrastructure based on the court systems of a handful of districts across the United States.

Basically, our counsel implied that the judges/litigators could be difficult and, based on rule 34(a), sequester the physical equipment the electronic information is contained on. In our case, that means disk arrays. Since this is the case, our legal department has their own disk array(s) spread geographically across the US.

Wow Jason, you raise some interesting challenges, many regulations are state and many times country specific. How do other companies maintain compliance across geographically dispersed locations? And, what happens to those companies operating internationally? This sounds like a real management nightmare from both the legal and IT standpoints.

Do you know if these rules did in fact take effect on December 1, 2006?

Best,
Tanya

How do you save a single page of a pdf to a separate file? For example, I have a 50 page document, I want to make just page 34 an entirely separate pdf file. Any way to do this?
